New Edition of Training in Indexing Course Announced

The American Society for Indexing is pleased to announce that the second edition of its Training in Indexing Course has launched and is now accepting registrations via the ASI Online Store. The new edition of the course is divided into four modules that contain all the content of the three-unit 2006 edition, reorganized and updated to reflect current indexing practices and standards, with a significant amount of new material in Module D. Wilson Award Recipient Announced

The American Society for Indexing and EBSCO Publishing are pleased to announce that the 2013 ASI/H.W. Wilson Award for Excellence in Indexing will be awarded to Kate Mertes for her index to My Thoughts (Mes Pensées) by Montesquieu, translated and edited by Henry C. Clark. An EBSCO Publishing representative will present the award to Kate during the Wilson Awards luncheon on Thursday, April 18, at the ASI Conference in San Antonio, Texas. See the full press release.

Business of Indexing Course

ASI's new Business of Indexing self-study course, covering the essentials of starting and running a freelance business, is now available for purchase in the Online Store. For new indexers, this course complements the formal ASI Training in Indexing Course by providing crucial information not included in that course. For experienced indexers, it serves as a valuable refresher and source of new ideas.

Nominations for the 2013 Wilson Award

Nominations for the 2013 American Society for Indexing/H. W. Wilson Award for Excellence are welcomed beginning December 1, 2012. The submission deadline is February 23, 2013. To address "copyright creep," the criteria for eligibility has been updated to include books in distribution by December 31, 2012. This year's award will be presented at the Annual Conference for the American Society for Indexing, April 17-20, in San Antonio, Texas. See the full press release.

 

Tom Lundy Selected as New Key Words Editor

ASI is pleased to announce the selection of Tom Lundy as Editor of Key Words beginning January 1, 2013. Tom will be replacing Judy Reveal, who retired recently after providing excellent editorial service for the past six years. Key Words is the official bulletin of the American Society for Indexing. Beginning with the January 2013 issue, Key Words will be published monthly online in pdf format, with cumulative print issues of feature content. For Key Words inquiries, article submissions, or congratulations on his new position, email Tom at keywords@asindexing.org. 2012 Revision of the International Agreement

The International Affiliation Agreement reflects the current relationships between several international indexing societies. The agreement marks the development of international relationships between these societies, and the support and exchange of ideas that the societies can offer to each other. The full agreement which lists the affiliated Societies, Associate Groups and Networks is available under the Affiliations section of the ASI Website.

How to Embed the ASIndexing Profile Widget

There is a new way to follow ASI on Twitter.The American Society for Indexing announces a new widget people can use to help keep up with all the ASI news on Twitter. ASI Member Rose Ippolito and her business partner have created a page that explains how: http://www.indocsindexing.com/ASI/twitter/ The widget displays the 100 most recent tweets in a scrollable area that shows the most recent 4 tweets. The page is also available in a .zip file so that it can be downloaded and added to other websites, for Chapters and SIGs, for example. Many thanks to ASI Member Rose Ippolito and her business partner for so graciously setting this up for us!

Reciprocal Agreement with the Society for Technical Communications

Did you know that ASI and the Society for Technical Communication have a formal Memorandum of Understanding that brings benefits to members of both organizations? This is a summary of what the agreements means to you as a member of ASI.

  • ASI members receive STC member registration rates for events organized by STC. ASI members also receive STC member rates for STC products. The reverse is also true in that STC members get ASI member registration rates and member rates on products.
  • ASI is recognized as an STC member on the ASI homepage and vice versa.
  • Both organizations reference and promote each other’s events, except those within 30 days of annual conferences.
  • ASI and STC may co-develop and/or co-host joint educational events.
  • There is a reciprocal trade for advertising in each other’s membership magazines.
