ASI Certificate Course

Positions

ASI is seeking experienced, professional indexers to serve as exam markers and a course administrator for its new distance learning training course in indexing.

Appointment to the Course Administrator position will be made no later than April 17, 2006; Exam Markers will be appointed no later than May 1, 2006.

The Course Administrator and Exam Markers are expected to attend the ASI Annual Conference to be held in Toronto, Canada, from June 15-17, for orientation and training.

Exam Markers

Exam Markers will evaluate exam papers from course participants, under the direction of the Course Administrator. This will be an anonymous process, with only the Administrator knowing which Exam Marker has been paired with an exam taker.

Applicants should be able to demonstrate:

  • current ASI membership
  • extensive indexing experience
  • evidence of interest in indexer training and education
  • solid communication skills
  • timely response to time-sensitive materials
  • ability to honor a commitment to confidentiality

Successful applicants will:

  • undergo course orientation and training in marking protocol and process for each unit examination
  • receive and mark exam papers for Units A, B, and C in timely fashion according to established protocol and procedures
  • return marked papers and results to Course Administrator
  • be available for periodic review of exam procedures and liaise with course administrator as necessary
  • maintain confidentiality

It is currently anticipated these activities will be handled electronically with the exception of the marking training which will be offered as an annual group orientation session at an ASI meeting – the first to take place in Toronto in June 2006.

Please note that this position does not guarantee a minimum number of exams in any given time-frame nor will markers be allowed to mark exams for which they have not undergone course orientation and marking training. Markers will be responsible for apprising the Course Administrator of their ongoing availability.

Compensation: markers will be paid a set fee for each exam unit (each unit will take a different amount of time to review and grade; the fees are based on the rate of $50/hour).

Course Administrator

The Course Administrator will be responsible for course material logistics (including shipment of course CDs), monitoring progress of course participants, and liasing with Exam Markers and ASI's management company. Please note that this position does not involve the handling of any fees associated with course units or examinations. Apart from physically shipping course materials (CD packet), it is currently anticipated almost all other activities will be handled electronically

Applicants should be able to demonstrate:

  • current ASI membership
  • extensive indexing experience
  • experience managing or training others
  • excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • timely response to time-sensitive materials
  • familiarity with spreadsheet and/or database programs
  • ability to honor a commitment to confidentiality

Successful applicant will:

  • undergo course orientation and training in marking protocol and process for each unit examination
  • develop, implement, and refine course logistics, with assistance from ASI Training Committee
  • communicate with interested parties
  • maintain confidentiality

Compensation: approximately $2400/year + a small handling fee for each unit shipped. Shipping costs and out-of-pocket expenses will be directly reimbursed upon documentation.
