Indexing for Beginners
Ann Hall, Registered Indexer since 1978, Book Indexing Postal Tutorials
Indexing Course Coordinator, Moffat, Scotland. The basic principles of
indexing will be covered in this workshop. Participants will concentrate
on ways in which to make an index accessible to the user. Practical exercises
will be part of the workshop, and there will be as much opportunity as
possible for discussion and participation
Weaving Your Own Small Web: ASI Did It, So Can You!

This workshop, prepared by the developers of the ASI Web Page, will
teach indexers how to create a Home Page by reviewing and understanding
the process used to create the ASI Web Page. We will cover Web philosophy,
aesthetics, and practical HTML tagging. Attendees will leave this workshop
with paper copies of working Web page they create, ready to be transformed
into their own Home Page.

Marketing Your Indexing Services

This workshop will cover the important aspects of marketing yourself
as a professional indexer: (1) what marketing really is; (2) why marketing
is necessary for established indexers as well as novices; (3) why we all
have negative attitudes about selling ourselves, and how to overcome those
attitudes; and (4) successful strategies for obtaining clients.
The Structure of Book Indexes
Bella Hass Weinberg, Professor, Division of Library and Information

Three topics relating to the structure of book indexes will be discussed:
(1) the organization of a reference book or technical manual in relation
to its index; (2) alphabetical indexes as complements to the logical/classified
order of information in a narrative text; and (3) chain indexing vs. analysis
of clocks of text. This workshop is intended for intermediate to advanced
indexers; however, students of indexing may find the discussion challenging
and are welcome to attend.

is "on their own" to get back to the hotel, but this area is only a short
cab ride from the conference hotel.
