A. Basic Indexing Workshop, Part I Joanne Clendenen and Kay Kutscha Schlembach, Houston, TX - a mentor/mentee team who often collaborate on projects For new indexers who want to learn basic indexing skills. You will have an "assignment" to do at the end of the first session, which you will work with during the second session on Thursday. 
B. Advanced Indexing with Macrex Gale Rhoades, North American Publisher of Macrex, Daly City, CA For those who have completed at least 2 indexes with Macrex software.  
C. Advanced Editing and File Preparation with CINDEX: for the established indexer using CINDEX on any platform (Windows, Macintosh, DOS) Maria Sullivan Young, CINDEX Trainer and Technical Support Provider, Rochester, NY Using logical (Boolean) operators, pattern-matching, and groups to manage complex editing tasks; working with temporary pagination; revising, cumulating, and splitting indexes. Specialized preparation of index documents for typesetting and electronic media.  
D. Hiring and Training Legal Indexers Mary Ann Chulick - Indexing Manager for Westgroup, Cleveland, OH, and Kim Hunter, Attorney - Training Manager for BNA's Indexing Department, Washington, DC Kim oversees the testing and interviewing for new hires. Mary Ann has been an Indexing Manager for over 12 years; she tests indexing applicants, hires and trains them.

E Understanding Indexing with PageMaker Jan C. Wright - Freelance Indexer, Seattle, WA Learn the specifics of indexing with this desktop publishing package. 
F. Basic Indexing with Macrex Gale Rhoades, North American Publisher of Macrex, Daly City, CA Those attending this workshop should already own Macrex and have completed the Getting Started exercises.  
G. Getting the Most Out of CINDEX for Windows: for new indexers or users new to CINDEX for Windows Maria Sullivan Young, CINDEX Trainer and Technical Support Provider, Rochester, NY 

 

An overview of CINDEX for Windows from starting an index to the preparation of final copy, with special emphasis on data entry techniques, editing shortcuts, and preparing files for your clients. Also covers features new to CINDEX for Windows, and migration from CINDEX for DOS.

Part II
Joanne Clendenen and Kay Kutscha Schlembach  A continuation of Wednesday's workshop.
I. Facing the Text: Content Analysis and Entry Selection in Social Sciences and Humanities Indexing, Part I Do Mi Stauber - Full-time Indexer for over 11 years and current Chair of the Wilson Award Committee This popular participatory workshop covers back-of-the-book indexing of scholarly books and textbooks in the humanities. NOTE: This is a full-day workshop; it will run from 8:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. 
J. Medical Indexing: Coming to Terms with Tradition and Technology 

 

Cynthia Bertelsen, Carolyn Weaver, Pilar Wyman - Cynthia, a member of the ASI Board and editor of Key Words, is a full-time freelance indexer; Carolyn Weaver, current Chair of the ASI Pacific Northwest Chapter, is a full-time medical librarian and moonlighting indexer of health sciences books and journals; Pilar, former Chair of the ASI DC Metro Chapter, is a full-time freelance indexer of clinical medicine books and journals. 

 

This presentation begins with a discussion of the problems inherent in indexing medical materials. It will then move on to a live demonstration of PubMed and Internet Grateful Med for searching MEDLINE, as well as other databases and health sciences terminology resources. Cynthia and Pilar will lead a discussion on basic techniques for CD-ROM medical indexing and the increasing market for this process. Cynthia will discuss print medical reference materials and provide guidelines on when to use what tool in terms of common indexing and complex medical indexing problems.
K. Threading an Index Outline, or "Indexing with Your Book Closed"

What distinguishes an indexer from a non-indexer is the indexer's ability to draw terminology and concepts from a text, and then to deliver that information in a logical and approachable format. This cognitive process is the basis of this workshop.

M. Indexing Images: New Contexts, New Frontiers Christine Jacobs and James Turner - Christine, Past-President of IASC, is an instructor in the Documentation and Library Sciences Dept. of John Abbott College, near Montreal; James, Vice President of IASC, is a professor at the École de bibliothéconomie et des sciences se l'information at the Université de Montréal.  A comprehensive overview of the main issues in indexing non-art and moving images.
N. Bidding and Winning: Writing Successful Proposals 

 

Janet Perlman and Noeline Bridge - Janet, Past President of the Arizona Chapter, serves on the ASI Board as Secretary; Noeline is the President of IASC. 

 

This workshop will prepare indexers to submit complete, well thought-out, professional-looking, and competitive proposals. Attendees will gain the skills to be successful in bidding on business.
O. Editing Indexes Alan Walker and Pilar Wyman - Alan is President of the Australian Society of Indexers (AusSI); Pilar Wyman, former Chair of the ASI DC Metro Chapter, is a full-time freelance indexer of clinical medicine books and journals.  Learn effective editing methods and techniques for refining and polishing your indexes into true works of art!
