to Terms with Tradition and Technology

Cynthia Bertelsen, Carolyn Weaver,
Pilar Wyman - Cynthia, a member of the ASI Board and editor of Key Words,
is a full-time freelance indexer; Carolyn Weaver, current Chair of the
ASI Pacific Northwest Chapter, is a full-time medical librarian and moonlighting
indexer of health sciences books and journals; Pilar, former Chair of the
ASI DC Metro Chapter, is a full-time freelance indexer of clinical medicine
books and journals.

This presentation begins with a discussion
of the problems inherent in indexing medical materials. It will then move
on to a live demonstration of PubMed and Internet Grateful Med for searching
MEDLINE, as well as other databases and health sciences terminology resources.
Cynthia and Pilar will lead a discussion on basic techniques for CD-ROM
medical indexing and the increasing market for this process. Cynthia will
discuss print medical reference materials and provide guidelines on when
to use what tool in terms of common indexing and complex medical indexing
problems. |

What distinguishes an indexer from a non-indexer
is the indexer's ability to draw terminology and concepts from a text,
