What’s In a Name? Beyond Webster’s Biographical Dictionary 
Jean Thompson 

This workshop will explore names of various types (personal, geographic, corporate, conference, titles) which can be problematical for the indexer, especially if they are names from a language or culture unfamiliar to the indexer. Print resources such as Webster’s Biographical Dictionary, The Cambridge Biographical Dictionary, and other general encyclopedias. Electronic resources available on the World Wide Web, such as the Library of Congress Authority Files, Encyclopedia of Associations and databases available through OCLC’s First Search and Dialog. 

Audience: Indexers interested in learning to research names. 

Presenter: Jean Thompson is currently a Monographic Cataloger at the University of Albany (SUNY).

Basic Indexing Workshop, Part 1 
Kay Schlembach and Joanne Clendenen 

A full-day, fast-paced introduction to the basic concepts of classic back-of-the-book indexing techniques including alphabetization, format, entry considerations, cross-references, and simple editing. A short assignment will be given at the end of the first session, to be evaluated during the second session. This workshop is a supplement to the USDA course. 

Audience: Those considering indexing as a career, writers, editors, or other publishing professionals who want to increase their knowledge of the indexing process. 

Presenters: Kay Schlembach and Joanne Clendenen are working partners and  freelance indexers in Houston, Texas. Joanne is president and founder of the South Central Chapter of ASI.

Advanced Indexing with MACREX 
Gale Rhoades 

Learn techniques to improve your productivity, eliminate repetitive tasks, create multiple indexes in a single pass, utilize volume/page numbers for nonbook materials and index without final folios. This workshop is for those who have completed at least two indexes with MACREX and is an excellent opportunity to see why you should upgrade to version 7. 

Audience: Advanced 

Presenter: Gale Rhoades manages the North American office for MACREX and provides support for it.

Online Help Indexing (full day) 
Bill Meisheid 

This full-day workshop will cover Help authoring tools for online indexing (RoboHELP, Doc-To-Help, etc.).  Web indexing will be discussed as much as those tools build for HTML and as a result for the web. 

Presenter: Bill Meisheid,  a presenter at the Information Online 98 Conference and Expo in Chicago, he is the owner of Sageline Publishing in Ellicott City, MD. According to a recent quote on Index-L, “when considering online access it is true that natural language query processes will help many people where full text search has failed them. However, there is one thing it can never replace, due to the need for the user to formulate a question: the browsability of an index.”

New Users of  CINDEX for Windows 
Maria Sullivan Young 

This workshop is for those users who would like to explore the standard features of CINDEX for Windows. Special emphasis will be on keyboarding and other data entry and editing shortcuts, file management and index preparation for clients’ varied needs. 

Audience: Open to CINDEX users of every level 

Presenter: Maria Sullivan Young has been indexing for 11 years. She is also responsible for providing on-line technical support for Indexing Research for its family of CINDEX products.

Indexing Legal Materials: Sharing Approaches 
Kristine Karnezis 

Various approaches to indexing legal materials–what we do and why– and how those approaches may vary depending on the type of legal material being indexed will be the focus of this workshop. This participatory workshop will also include discussion of the audiences for various legal indexes and feedback from customers–both solicited and unsolicited–and how it affects what is indexed. 

Audience: Intermediate to Advanced Indexers 

Presenter: Kristine Karnezis is an attorney with nearly 20 years of experience in indexing legal materials

Basic Indexing with MACREX

Level: Beginning 

This workshop will allow you to create your first index using MACREX. You will learn keyboard macros and keywords for double posting and other tasks, spell-checking, multitasking with Windows, and preparing electronic copy for submission to publishers. Those attending this workshop should already own MACREX and have completed the Getting Started exercises.

Moving Beyond the Basics with CINDEX for Windows 
Maria Sullivan Young 

This workshop will be for those users who would like to maximize their productivity.  Geared toward making the most efficient and effective use of CINDEX, this workshop will focus on advanced editing techniques, including importing data into CINDEX from other sources, handling extended and unusual characters, and working with multiple files. 

Audience: Open to CINDEX users of every level

Web Indexing (full day) 
Kevin Broccoli, Marilyn Rowland, Gerry Van Ravenswaay 

This full-day hands-on workshop will provide an overview of background information and the hands-on creation of a Web index. Topics to be covered include: 

    types of Web indexing 
    advantages and disadvantages of Web Indexes 
    Web indexes versus search engines 
    differences between Web indexes and print indexes 
    market for Web indexes 
    Web indexing tools 
    maintaining the Web index 
    creation of HTML pages 
    online examples of Web indexes 
    hands-on creation of a Web index for a small informational site.
Audience: Experienced indexers who want to learn Web indexing 

Presenters: 

Kevin Broccoli is involved in the fields of book indexing, indexing for online help, Web site indexing, and information architecture. He is co-coordinator of the Web Indexing Special Interests Group of ASI. He has written a Web index for the Florida Internet Center for Understanding Sustainability. 

Marilyn Rowland has over 25 years’ experience in indexing. She is chair and co-webmaster of the ASI Web site.  Marilyn won Second Place in the 1998 Web Indexing Prize sponsored by the Australian Society of Indexers. Her submission was the online index for Acxiom’s online newsletter, Case-in-Point.  Marilyn Rowland is also co-editor with Diane Brenner of Beyond Book Indexing: How to Get Started in Web Indexing, Embedded Indexing, and other Computer-based Media.  It will be available for purchase in the fall of 1999. 

Gerry Van Ravenswaay, an indexer with over six years experience, is on the ASI Web Committee and is the Webmaster of the Chicago/Great Lakes Chapter Web site. He, along with Kevin, wrote the index for the ASI Web site.

Polishing the Product  
Enid Zafran 

Learn how to make your index shine with a thorough final edit. The workshop will include a checklist of steps for reviewing the index as well as a hands-on exercise. Solutions to typical situations created when indexing will be discussed in addition to tips on how software can help you avoid embarrassing flaws. 

Presenter: Enid Zafran is the Director of Indexing Services at the Bureau of National Affairs (BNA) in Washington, D.C., where she oversees a staff of 45 in-house indexers. She also has her own freelance indexing business, Indexing Partners, teaches indexing at EEI in Alexander, VA., and is ASI Publications Chair.

Introduction to MACREX 
Do Mi Stauber 

This workshop will discuss the basics of an index entry and how to make it using MACREX. 

Audience: This workshop is for those who are new to indexing and/or who are looking for an indexing program. 

Presenter: Do Mi Stauber has been indexing full-time for 13 years. She specialized in social sciences and humanities in back-of-the-book indexing as well as writing and presenting workshops. She has been a happy MACREX user for the last 9 years.

Thesauri Development 
Jessica Milstead 

Major indexing projects require use of formal methods of managing the vocabulary of the index. A thesaurus is the most sophisticated method used for vocabulary control. This workshop will introduce participants to the concepts of vocabulary management, including when it is needed, and determining the levels of management needed. The emphasis will be on back-of-the-book indexes and a major component of the workshop will be on the basics of thesaurus construction. One or more thesaurus management software management packages will be demonstrated. 

Audience: Intermediate 

Presenter: Jessica Milstead is the principal of The JELEM Company, which offers consulting services in development of thesauri and vocabularies for both indexing and searching.
