Tours
ASI has set up two bus tours for conference attendees for the afternoon of Sunday, May 19. Both tours will last approximately 4 hours, from 2pm to 6pm. Each tour will cost $35 per person. We will need a minimum of 15 persons for each tour to run, and can handle a maximum of 50 people per tour – so sign up early! You must register for these events by April 15.
Historical Tour
Join your colleagues for a guided tour of historic Galveston, and a chance to shop and/or visit several of the city’s grand mansions. Your guide will provide an overview of the city, describe points of interest, and answer questions. The tour will pass through historic residential districts, the University of Texas Medical Branch campus, Galveston’s dock area, the art district along Postoffice Street, and the Strand Historical District, the city’s commercial heart. Those who would like to explore the Strand area on foot may disembark for shopping and sightseeing, a chance to see the short films on Jean Lafitte and the Galveston Hurricane at Pier 21, and tour the tall ship Elissa. The bus will also make a stop convenient to the Moody Mansion and Ashton Villa for those wishing to go through the houses. The bus will return at a specified time and place to take you back to the Moody Gardens Hotel. If you want more time to explore or you wish to visit one of the many area restaurants, you can easily return to the hotel by taxi, or alternate transport with the hotel can be arranged.
Nature Tour
Galveston Island’s multiple ecosystems shelter a rich range of wildlife, especially birds. The barrier island provides a permanent home for many species, and is a major stop on aviary migration routes. Birders have spotted cormorants, egrets, white and brown pelicans, heron, ibis, ducks, gulls, avocets, plovers, black skimmers, terns, and many varieties of song birds in Galveston’s thickets, wetlands, beaches, and estuarine complexes. An experienced guide will lead you on a tour of the island’s natural wonders.
Moody Gardens Passes
Moody Gardens has many attractions of its own, including an aquarium, a rainforest environment, a discovery museum, an IMAX theater, and an IMAX ride experience. Attendees may purchase a discounted all-events pass for $35 for the period of the conference, providing unlimited access to all of Moody Gardens’ entertainment and education sites (see the Registration Form). Individual admission to these areas range from $6 to $15 each. This pass allows unlimited visits during your stay. It is a great bargain! These discounted passes will not be available to purchase on-site.
