Air Travel To and From Galveston

By Air: Galveston is located on a barrier island off the coast of Texas, just south of Houston. Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport, served by all the major airlines, is about 11/2 hours from Galveston by limousine ; Houston’s Hobby Airport (American Eagle, Continental Express, Delta, Northwest, Southwest, and Atlantic Southeast Airlines all fly into Hobby) is a little closer to Galveston, 45 minutes. Continental Express also flies into Ellington Field, which is only about 20 minutes from Galveston. For the sake of comparison, Bush Intercontinental is about as close to Galveston as Dulles is from Washington DC, or Denver airport from downtown Denver.

Ground Transportation to and from Galveston

Galveston Limousine Service provides shuttle service that runs regularly between the Moody Gardens Hotel and both Hobby and Intercontinental Airports. Estimated travel time is one hour from Hobby and two hours from Intercontinental. Estimated rates are $25 one-way, $35 round trip from Hobby and $30 one-way, $45 round trip from Intercontinental. (Round trip discounted rate, must identify yourself as American Society of Indexers attendee to receive.) It is the most convenient way to get to the hotel and making reservations are very easy by one of three ways:

  1. Call them directly for reservations at (800) 640-4826 or (409) 740-5466 and directly pay the driver. They will need arrival and departure times and the flight information.
  2. Make your reservations and payment directly on-line at http://www.galvestonlimousineservice.com/ through their secure Web site.
  3. Make your reservation through a form we will send you with your confirmation letter! It will contain the full schedule and rates for both airports.

You can also rent a car, Hobby and Intercontinental are served by the major car rental agencies, and Moody Gardens has lots of parking. Driving around Galveston Island is easy and convenient.

Travel Discounts

We have negotiated special airline and car rental rates including: United Airlines, Budget and Avis. If you would like to take advantage of these or need assistance with travel arrangements, contact Preferred Travel Services at (800) 848-6864 (toll-free) or (303) 298-7050, Monday – Friday, 9:00am – 6:00pm (MT). Please identify yourself as an ASI Meeting attendee.

Avis is the official car rental provider for the conference. You can make a reservation online.

Registration
Registration will commence at 11am, Thursday, May 16 (the first sessions of the conference start at 2pm). The registration desk is located at the corner of the main lobby and the corridor off which the conference sessions will take place, right outside the Exhibit Hall and refreshments area. Follow the signs!
Meeting Host Hotel – Moody Gardens

The meeting is at the Moody Gardens Hotel, which is located in the center of Galveston Island, and is serviced directly by the Galveston Limousine Service to and from the airports. It has plenty of parking for those of you who will be driving in. Moody Gardens started out as a therapy center and has metamorphosed into a superb hotel and entertainment complex, with its own discovery museum, rainforest garden, aquarium, and IMAX theaters (see Moody Gardens’ website, www.moodygardens.com, for more details).

Most rooms in our conference block have two queen beds. Rooms with king beds are also available (as are suites, rooms with mini-fridges, and rooms with full-size Jacuzzi tubs, if you are so minded). As well as the usual amenities, all hotel rooms have hair dryers, irons and ironing boards, coffee machines, bathrobes, play stations, and bathroom telephones. Every room is equipped with data ports, and the desks are fitted with multiple outlets.

Food
Conference attendees will get Continental Breakfast (pastries, coffee and juice) and lunch Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, coffee breaks and afternoon snacks as part of the price of attendance. Tickets for the Saturday night banquet and cruise (on a paddle steamer, the Colonel, docked at Moody Gardens) will be available separately (see the registration form). So you’ll need to make your own arrangements for breakfast, Thursday lunch (registration starts at 11am that day; the first sessions will begin at 2pm), and most dinners; but never fear – Galveston has tons of good eatin’, and Moody Gardens itself has LOTS of restaurants. A separate restaurant guide will be available on the ASI website and in your conference registration packets.
Moody Gardens Hotel
We’ve negotiated a rate of $135 per night (plus applicable taxes) for the conference period (starting Tuesday, May 14th), an excellent value for this site. To make your reservations, contact the Moody Gardens at (888) 388-8484 (toll-free) or (409) 741-8484. The hotel reservation deadline for our room block is April 22, 2002; rooms will be on a space available basis after that date. Don’t delay, make your reservations today!
