Pre-Conference Workshops

All Day Workshops 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM

  • Basic Indexing Workshop - Kay Schlembach
Newer indexers as well as others needing a refresher will value this opportunity to build, review, and reinforce their fundamental skills. Either by itself, or in conjunction with the USDA beginning indexing correspondence course, this fast-paced introduction to basic concepts for classic back-of-the-book indexing techniques covers alphabetization, format, entry, cross-references, and simple editing. Our journey will also touch on embedded indexing. The workshop is conducted in morning and afternoon sessions with an exercise to be completed over the lunch period.

Tracing the Themes - Christine Jacobs
This workshop focuses on the challenges and pleasures in identifying, tracing and expressing the levels of meaning in scholarly texts. These books often pose a number of difficulties to the indexer, including complex analytical discussions, inter-disciplinarity and implicit themes. Using a hands-on approach and excerpts from a variety of texts, we will explore such factors as user requirements, author vocabulary, multi-author texts, concept interdependence and primary sources. Practical exercises will form the basis for discussion of the issues surrounding subject analysis and index structure. Suitable for experienced and novice indexers.
  • 8:30 AM - Noon

In this workshop, you'll learn about the types of CVs, including synonym rings, authority files, hierarchies, and thesauri. We will explore the structure of CVs, how they are used and methods for their creation.
