I IS FOR INDEXING

Post-Conference Workshops

Saturday, May 14, 2005

1:30PM–5PM—Workshop 8

Marketing

Carol Roberts and Galen Schroeder

Two indexers join forces to present "cold calling" techniques (Galen's) and alternatives to cold calling (Carol's). This dual-approach presentation is intended for indexers at all levels, from beginners looking for their first client to established indexers looking for new markets. All participants are encouraged to bring samples of their own marketing materials, for evaluation and, perhaps, improvement.

1:30PM–5PM- Workshop 9

Microsoft for Indexers

Gale Rhoades

Learn more about the Microsoft Windows and Office products so essential to the business of indexing. Drawn from recent support queries, each workshop is unique but all cover issues encountered by indexers in the daily pursuit of a profitable career. Learn the basic, timesaving methods, and new techniques. Bring your questions for on-the-spot answers.

1:30PM–5PM—Workshop 10

SkyIndex Shortcuts

Kari Kells

In this workshop the participants will review the basics of using SkyIndex Professional and will move on to more advanced techniques that reveal tricks for using Sky efficiently. Although this workshop is demo-oriented, participants will be encouraged to share their experiences with Sky—from miraculous tricks they've stumbled upon, to frustrating Sky features. The participants will discuss editing methods and tricks; advanced searching and replacing (including pattern matching); creating and working with macros; using acronyms; configuring indexes; generating and printing indexes, and much more.

1:30PM–5PM—Workshop 11

NASCAR Indexing: Creating and Maintaining Speed

Kate Mertes

Time is money, and indexers are business people. This workshop will show you how to index like a NASCAR driver, crossing the finish line with speed, accuracy, and efficiency (but without the jumpsuit and commercial endorsement decals). First we'll discuss how to determine and set speed goals in indexing, with a focus on the relationship between speed and quality. Next, we'll go over the baseline requirements for fast indexing. Finally, we'll deal with specific, practical tips for creating and maintaining speed. This workshop is intended for experienced indexers used to working with challenging texts.
