Workshop 7: SKY Index Professional: From Basics to the Advanced
Presenter: Kamm Schreiner
This workshop will start with the basics on how to use and configure SKY Index Professional and will progress to more advanced topics. Attendees will learn how to more effectively use the program and will be presented with tips and techniques for efficient editing and data entry. Some of the topics that will be covered are: Macros, Acronyms, Grouping, Formatting, Find/Replace, Pattern Matching, and more.
Workshop 8: Writing Medical Indexes—An Introduction
Presenter: Pilar Wyman
This workshop will focus on how to write indexes for medical media. A brief overview of quality indexes will be followed by an introduction to medical indexes and initial indexing work. Attendees will be requested to complete a homework assignment evaluating indexes, and then will participate in hands-on group activities as we write and edit an index for a sample text. We’ll review how to evaluate indexes, and in addition to criteria for quality indexes, attendees will receive many tips for editing indexes. This workshop is endorsed by the Science and Medicine Indexing Special Interest Group.
Workshop 9: CINDEX™ Basics
Presenter: Frances S. Lennie
Aimed at new users of CINDEX™, or existing users needing a refresher session, the workshop will cover the fundamentals of using the program: efficient data entry, keyboard shortcuts, navigational aids, working with more than one index on screen, viewing and sorting options, and preparing your final file for the client. Handouts detailing step-by-step procedures and efficiency tips will be provided. Suitable for both Windows and Macintosh users.
Workshop 10: So You Want to Index Computer Manuals?
Presenter: Dick Evans
Are you an experienced indexer looking for new worlds to conquer? A novice seeking a specialty in which to start your career? If so, consider the fascinating world of computer documentation! This half-day session will cover: required background; getting a foot in the door; characteristics of computer manuals; task orientation concepts; the user perspective; identifying indexable material; evaluating the significance of topics; creating index entries from selected topics; editing the final index for style and content; evaluating and adjusting the size of the index; and estimating time required to create an index.
