Poster Presentations
Presenters will be available in the Exhibits area Thursday from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. to discuss their posters. Posters will remain on display in the Exhibits area through Saturday morning.
Poster 1: The Physically Fit Indexer
Presenter: Marlene F. London
Indexing is a sedentary profession. To maintain our health and to continue to do what we love for many years to come, we must pay attention to our bodies. In this poster presentation, Marlene will emphasize, with illustrations and some text, stretching and the use of light weights and small props, such as elastic bands, which anyone can afford. While not an exercise instructor, Marlene has participated in fitness classes for many years. Even those of us without a weight problem must exercise to maintain a strong heart, good posture, toned muscles, greater energy, sound sleep, and a good frame of mind, ready to tackle each day's challenges (indexing or otherwise).
Poster 2: Publicize Yourself and Your Chapter
Presenter: Judy Kip
This poster will include sample news releases and articles published in newspapers after receipt of the releases. There will be instructions for writing and formatting press releases and for researching contacts at local media outlets. Submission methods (e-mail, snail mail, or fax) will be addressed. There will be suggestions of what events or activities to publicize. Keeping records of press releases sent to whom, and whether they were used will also be addressed.
Poster 3: The Unbearable Aboutness of Periodical and Database Indexing
Presenter: Linda S. Dunn
Periodical and database indexing are, of course, similar in many ways to back of the book indexing. But there are also significant differences in the indexing of periodicals and for databases (not websites). The topics presented will include the use of outside authority files and the development of thesauri and subject hierarchies, as well as the mysteries of the "aboutness" of articles, the rule of four, and index-specific subject priorities. Examples of periodical indexes will be shown as well as a sample comparison of periodical and book indexing of an article from a popular film magazine.
