All-Day Workshop

8:00am–5:00pm
Workshop 1: Basic Indexing
Presenter: Kay Schlembach

This basic presentation offers a seasoned, comprehensive, energetic, face-to-face experience for those wanting to learn fundamental indexing techniques and thinking skills. Beginning indexers, people experiencing career changes, information workers, editors, and writers will benefit from this fast-paced workshop. Material is presented in a straightforward and practical manner, accompanied by numerous examples and opportunities for self-evaluation, plus instructor feedback and group participation. Live teaching, diverse interaction, and instant feedback serve to complement independent learning. Key concepts covered include term selection, entries, cross-references, formatting, and simple editing. Learners will be able to create an index by the end of this full-day workshop.

Workshop 2: Creating Taxonomies and Controlled Vocabularies
Presenter: Fred Leise

Users face many problems when trying to find information on a website or Intranet. They are often overwhelmed with long lists of search results or are stopped in their tracks when their searches produce no results at all. This workshop will help you understand the importance of proper taxonomy and controlled vocabulary (CV) development and will provide you with methods and techniques for creating taxonomies. We will cover such topics as: uses and roles of taxonomies; a user-centric methodology for creating CVs; understanding business, user and content contexts; validation techniques; and governance and maintenance issues.

Morning Half-Day Workshops

8:00am–12:00noon

Workshop 3: Scholarly Indexing
Presenter: Carol Roberts

This hands-on workshop covers some of the more vexing issues that are peculiar to scholarly indexing: how and when to index the metatopic, analyzing (and understanding!) complex material, when to turn down a book project, boiling down complex text to succinct entries, expertise required, handling endnotes, and of course improving your speed. Although the workshop is aimed primarily at intermediate indexers who already have some experience indexing scholarly books, newer indexers are welcome to attend, especially if they're trying to decide whether to pursue scholarly indexing. This workshop is not platform-specific (i.e., PC vs. Mac). This workshop is endorsed by the Scholarly Indexing Special Interest Group.

8:00am–12:00noon

Workshop 4: Creating Website Indexes
Presenter: Heather Hedden

This workshop instructs participants on how to create back-of-the-book style indexes on web sites or intranets. The presentation content, examples, and exercises come from the 13-week online course that was taught by Hedden Information Management in 2005. A review of HTML codes will be provided, so participants with no prior experience with HTML may take this workshop, but prior experience with HTML is an advantage. Indexing experience is also not necessary, but a basic familiarity with the concepts of subentries, double-posting, and cross-references is assumed. Indexing techniques and tools specific to web site indexing will be presented. This workshop is endorsed by the Web Indexing Special Interest Group.

10:15am–10:30am

Afternoon Half-Day Workshops

Workshop 5: Indexing Lives
Presenter: Martin L. White

This workshop will address major topics in the indexing of biographies and biography-like texts, including: handling of personal names; entry for the subject of the biography; analysis and locator strings; and organization of the entry for the subject. Examples will be analyzed for usability.

Workshop 6: Legal Indexing
Presenters: Enid Zafran and Kate Mertes

This workshop is intended for experienced indexers who are interested in learning more about the specialty of legal indexing. The presenters have worked with all the major U.S. legal publishers as well as many government agencies. They will explain the types of material, style of entries and references, cross-references, term selection, and structure of legal indexes. Tables of cases and authorities will also be covered. Participants will work in groups and individually on hands-on exercises as part of the workshop. This workshop is endorsed by the Legal Indexing Special Interest Group.
