Call for Papers

The Conference Committee has already approached some speakers to address issues central to indexing in the current business climate, to demonstrate embedding and other computer-aided techniques, to present sessions on abstracting and database indexing—two topics sadly missing from recent conference programs—as well as a look at current research efforts in indexing and related fields.

However, we would welcome even more sessions to help us fulfill our goal of offering a complete experience in this central location. If you have answers to any of the following questions or simply a desire to explore the issues they evoke we encourage you to submit a proposal for a workshop, seminar session, or panel discussion.

The Indexing Process

• What ethical issues might an indexer face in the commission of a project?
• How do page layouts (boxed material, white space, illustrations, etc.) influence indexing decisions?
• What are the “rules” for using subcontractors?

Indexing Tools

• How can automatic indexing software help indexers?
• What strategies can be employed to get the best from your stand-alone indexing software?
• How can thesauri and taxonomies help indexers?

Communicating with Clients/The Business of Indexing

• Have you experienced difficulties handling requests from overseas clients?
• What current publishing trends have positively or negatively affected your business (and what adjustments have you made)?
• What are your tips for successfully negotiating a more appropriate fee or better time-frame?
• What business models are best suited for freelance indexers?
• What is involved in the development of a business plan (and why is it good to have one)?

Subject Specialties

As always, we welcome talks in any of the myriad subject areas that our profession covers, but this year we are especially looking for submissions in the following fields:

• Law
• Newspaper indexing (general approach or specific projects)
• History
• Philosophy
• Religion
• Botany
• Zoology

PRESENTATION FORMATS: Sessions can be offered as workshops (half- or full-day), as single- or two-speaker lecture format seminars (45 mins. or 1.5 hrs.), or as panel discussions (1.5 or 2 hrs.), or in any combination as you think best fits your topic. We’d also like to encourage poster presentations, particularly from SIGs, to be displayed in our public meeting area. Poster guidelines are here. The deadline for poster proposals is April 15, 2010.

HOW DO I SUBMIT A PROPOSAL? Use the online submission form for presentations or the online submission form for posters. Proposals will be evaluated as they are submitted. All presentation submissions are due by November 10, 2009; poster submissions by April 15, 2010.
