Dear Indexing Colleagues:

Transformation is upon us. It is no longer an ethereal concept for us to discuss and grapple with on a theoretical level. It is having broader influence than simply a different computer model or a new software upgrade. It is here – in our technology, in our business, in our lives.

Transformation is a different process of each of us. It is with this in mind that we are eager to invite you to join us in Providence, Rhode Island, April 28-30, 2011, for the American Society for Indexing's 43rd Annual Conference. Our theme is "Providential Transformation" and we will be looking at concrete, current and compelling aspects of what we all need to be doing to transform ourselves, our business and our craft.

We have two spectacular Keynote Speakers on the schedule: Erin McKean and Joshua Tallent. Erin has transformed herself from the print world, where she was editor-in-chief for American Dictionaries at Oxford University Press, to the digital realm in which she works as an online dictionary editor for the company she founded, Wordnik.com. You will see that she has managed to transform herself from a paper-based dictionary editor to an online dictionary editor. She will focus on that transformation process during our conference. Joshua is an eBook guru who works behind the scenes at KindleFormatting.com. He is at the forefront of the eBook world and he will provide us with perspective of one of the most challenging technical areas of transformation that we face.

In addition to the keynote speakers, we are thrilled about the unprecedented number of specially invited speakers from outside ASI who will be part of the program. Harry Bego will join us from the Netherlands to show us Textract. A special panel from WordCo will discuss the balancing act of indexing. We also have experts from the H.W. Wilson Co., theNew York Times, ProQuest, and the American Psychological Association on hand to discuss controlled vocabularies.

There will be something for all levels.

  • Beginning skills will be shared with new indexers.
  • For veteran indexers, adding skills like 21th century marketing, abstracting, and database indexing is another route to transformation.
  • On the international front, working with different cultures and languages is now an everyday requirement, not a luxury.
  • We will look at the client culture, specifically the changing nature of the business environment faced by publishers. How they react then in turn influences our businesses.
  • For established indexers, improving your indexing business may be one best way to transform. We will show you how.
  • At the individual level, we will offer networking, exercising, and life/work balance issues.

The ASI conference will help you decide how you will transform yourselves. The only given is that we cannot remain the same. We all have changes to make. Let's make them together in Providence.

See you in Rhode Island,

Richard Shrout Donna Drialo
President-elect, ASI Program Chair, 2011 ASI Conference
