You will team up with a conference Buddy who will help you get the most out of your conference experience. There will be a fun get-to-know-you activity that will help you quickly meet a gang of new ASI friends even before the conference starts.
Buddies are experienced conference-goers who will contact you prior to the conference, spend one-on-one time with you, and introduce you to other conference attendees. Seminar 2: Indexing Historical Documents
Level: Intermediate
A good index mediates between the languages of the author and the reader, providing a common ground on which different terms for the same concept can be coordinated and relevant relationships are revealed. But an index to a historical document must also mediate across time and space, countries and cultures, uniting author, translator, editor, and reader, all of whom may come from separate centuries. In this session we will look at the challenges of indexing materials written between the classical period and the early twentieth century, balancing the need to remain true to the usage of the original text with the importance of serving modern readers.

Seminar 3: Indexing for Apps

Pilar Wyman will discuss the evolution of indexes for Apps, which are electronic, mobile, or digital editions of books for smartphones and ereaders. She will share her experience indexing for Apps, and she will demonstrate how she updates the index for the mobile edition of a popular medical reference title. Discussion will also include, as time allows, how such indexing is evolving and future directions. NB: This session includes updates from a presentation on the same topic to the July 2012 Society of Indexers (SI) conference, as published in the Oct-Dec 2012 issue of Key Words.

Taxonomy Pitfalls and Problem Solving: a Case Study in Applying Taxonomies to New Content, with Things To Try When That Goes Awry. In 2011 education and reference publisher Cengage Learning began applying its existing course-syllabus-based taxonomies to new content and products. In doing so the metadata team encountered several structural issues with their legacy taxonomies that made it difficult to implement this new indexing workflow in production systems and products. Members of Cengage Learnings Metadata Standards and Services team take you through how they identified problems with their existing taxonomies, how they analyzed the problems and opportunities, and how they ultimately merged the old taxonomies into improved discipline-based taxonomies.

Seminar 14: EJIW Index (Wheatley Medal 2011): New Publishing Technologies...

The index to the Encyclopedia of Jews in the Islamic World (Brill) won SI's Wheatley Medal in 2011. It was produced within a CMS (content management system) by three indexers from the Netherlands working as a team. The technology that was used, which will be described, turned out to be well suited to team indexing. Perhaps indexing is not such a lonely profession after all.

WS08: Taxonomy Essentials: Start Here!

A taxonomy is a controlled vocabulary used to categorize and retrieve documents, products, and images. It is a key part of information architecture, the organizational scheme underlying websites, linking related items and connecting search queries to relevant content. In this workshop we will explore taxonomy concepts; term selection, formatting, and arrangement; conceptual interrelationships; term record components; and source materials. Hands-on exercises will demonstrate aspects of taxonomy construction and reinforce concepts. Well talk about taxonomy construction standards and serving the unique needs of a project and client. We will also look briefly at taxonomy management software.
