This participatory workshop will explore ways to improve the wording of subheadings for clarity and conciseness. We will focus on theoretical material and group exercises; as well, attendees are encouraged to bring their own problematic subheadings to the workshop for public review and discussion.

Increase your indexing accuracy and productivity, reduce frustrations, and learn some seemingly magical tips and techniques. We'll cover Find, Search, setting preferences, numbering pages, navigating to pages, keyboard shortcuts, efficiently getting terms from PDFs into indexing software, splitting double-page spreads into single-page spreads, dealing with second editions and revised pages, combining separate files into one, separating one file into chapters, and signing PDF forms and contracts.

Your 21st Century Marketing Strategy: Preparing to Not Only Break the Ice, but Melt It! Paul Sweum of Top Hat Word & Index hosts an informative workshop about developing a complete marketing strategy, initiating it, and moving beyond the emails and phone calls to build client relationships. All the tips, tricks, and components necessary for a marketing strategy are discussed; branding, marketing materials, online presence, and less apparent marketing avenues that reveal results. He will share his experiences on initiating relationships by breaking the ice, and engaging potential clients to melt the ice and manufacture win-win outcomes. This session, chock-full of information, expands on a popular workshop from the 2012 ASI conference in San Diego!
 

WS04: Intro to XML Indexing in DocBook - CANCELLED

Hands-on experience doing XML indexing in DocBook, using Oxygen XML editor. Participants will need to bring their own laptop, and will need to download and install a test version of Oxygen (provided) prior to the workshop. Participants need not be conversant with XML, but a basic familiarity with HTML or other markup will be helpful.
 

WS05: Patterns in CINDEX

The use of pattern searches and replacements are an invaluable technique in the construction and editing of an index. This intensive workshop will cover the language of patterns, how to form and implement them, and common scenarios where they are most usefully employed.Working individually and in small groups we will extensively practice the writing and running of patterns on sample indexes, which will be provided prior to the conference. Suitable for users of both Windows and Mac platforms.

WS07: Practical Introduction to Indexing

Pragmatic and straightforward, Kay offers comprehensive, energetic, face-to-face exposure to fundamental book indexing techniques and thinking skills. Novice indexers, career changers, information workers, editors, and writers will benefit from this fast-paced workshop. Although indexing theory informs the material, Kay concentrates on the basic indexing process, accompanied by numerous examples and opportunities for self-evaluation, plus instructor feedback and group participation. Live teaching, diverse peer interaction, and instant feedback serve to complement isolated independent learning. Key concepts include term selection, entries, cross-references, formatting, and simple editing. Learners will be able to create a full index by the end of this full-day workshop.
 

WS08: Taxonomy Essentials: Start Here!

A taxonomy is a controlled vocabulary used to categorize and retrieve documents, products, and images. It is a key part of information architecture, the organizational scheme underlying websites, linking related items and connecting search queries to relevant content. In this workshop we will explore taxonomy concepts; term selection, formatting, and arrangement; conceptual interrelationships; term record components; and source materials. Hands-on exercises will demonstrate aspects of taxonomy construction and reinforce concepts. Well talk about taxonomy construction standards and serving the unique needs of a project and client. We will also look briefly at taxonomy management software.
