ASI Immediate Past-President Pilar Wyman to Helm ASI Books, an Expanding Program of How-To Guides and Handbooks for the Professional Indexing, Abstracting, and Taxonomy Communities

Print and Digital Titles in the Series Will Continue to Be Published by Information Today, Inc. (ITI) on Behalf of ASI

Tempe, AZ—March 24, 2014. The American Society for Indexing (ASI) has announced the appointment of Pilar Wyman, the immediate Past-President of ASI, as editor of the association’s professional book series effective May 1, 2014. Long-time series editor Enid L. Zafran will consign the role to Wyman during a ceremony at the start of the annual ASI conference being held this year in Charleston, SC.

ASI Books is a series of professional guides and handbooks designed to serve indexing professionals and has been published on behalf of ASI by Information Today, Inc. (ITI) since 1998. ITI will continue in the role of publisher as the series is set to expand under Wyman’s editorial leadership.

“ASI is delighted to name Pilar Wyman as editor of ASI Books,” said Ina Gravitz, ASI President. “The book program is a mainstay of our effort to help indexers and prospective indexers learn new skills and keep current. Pilar’s energy, expertise, and vision will ensure the continued success of this vital series of print and digital books written for indexers by indexers.”

Wyman, founder and chief indexer of Wyman Indexing, based in Washington DC, has been involved in the publishing field as an indexer, editor, and consultant for over 24 years. In addition to serving as ASI President from 2012–2013, she currently serves on the association’s Digital Trends Task Force (DTTF) and has been its International Representative since 2007, giving talks and presentations worldwide. No stranger to the association’s book publishing program, Wyman has contributed her expertise to numerous titles over the years and is the editor of Indexing Specialties: Medicine, a seminal text published by ASI Books in 1999. She also edited the association’s bulletin, Key Words, from 2000–2006.

“When it was announced that Enid Zafran would be retiring as ASI’s book editor after 18 impressive years in the role, we seriously questioned how or even if a suitable replacement could be found,” said John B. Bryans, ITI’s editor-in-chief and book publisher. “When we heard that Pilar Wyman had agreed to take over we were not just relieved, we were thrilled. In the many years we’ve worked with Pilar we have come to recognize her as one of the most capable, insightful, and dedicated indexer-editors on today’s publishing scene. ASI Books has been a star performer even through challenging times; with Pilar at the helm the future of this program could not be any brighter.”
