Practical Introduction to Indexing with Kay Schlembach (Workshop #7)

Are you a beginning indexer, editor, writer or someone considering a career change? Then you need Practical Introduction to Indexing, a full day workshop of ASI's 2013 conference, offered by Kay Schlembach of Potomac Indexing.

 

PRAGMATIC and straightforward, Kay offers comprehensive, energetic, face-to-face exposure to fundamental book indexing techniques and thinking skills. Novice indexers, career changers, information workers, editors, and writers will benefit from this FAST-PACED workshop. Although indexing theory informs the material, Kay concentrates on the BASIC INDEXING PROCESS, accompanied by numerous examples and opportunities for self-evaluation, plus instructor feedback and group participation. Live teaching, diverse peer interaction and instant feedback serves to COMPLEMENT isolated independent learning. Key concepts include term selection, entries, cross-references, formatting, and simple editing. Learners will be able to create a full-index by the end of this FULL-DAY workshop.

 

Kay Schlembach is passionate about teaching beginning indexers for over a decade. A "marvelous, vivacious teacher," Kay is managing senior partner with Potomac Indexing, LLC, a former ASI Director, and original ASI Training Course developer. Coming from a diverse background including homeschooling gifted children and real estate appraisal, Kay has been a full-time indexer since 1997.

 

Practical Introduction to Indexing - full day (8 hours), hands-on workshop teaches the basic principles of classic book indexing techniques and thought processes, including:

  • Indexer personality traits
  • Types of indexes
  • Term selection from text
  • Headings and sub-entries
  • Alphabetization
  • Page references
  • Cross references
  • Editing
  • Indexing software and other tools

BASIC INDEXING, offers a comprehensive, vigorous, face-to-face experience to people wanting to learn fundamental indexing techniques and thinking skills. Beginning indexers, career changers, information workers, editors, and writers will benefit from this FAST-PACED full-day workshop. Material is presented in a straightforward and practical manner, accompanied by numerous examples and opportunities for self-evaluation, plus instructor feedback and group participation.  Live teaching, diverse peer interaction and instant feedback serves to complement isolated independent learning.  Key concepts include indexing
terminology, entry construction and term selection, cross-references, formatting, and simple editing. Learners will be able to create and edit an index by the end of this workshop. Post-workshop support is also available. This workshop can serve as a complement to distance-learning and self-taught indexing education.
