As a former English professor of 20 years with indexing training from the American Society for Indexing and a professional Editing certificate from the University of Chicago, I have decades of experience editing book and journal collections, mentoring scholars and writers, and publishing my own and others’ academic research.

Why Me?
I can be trusted to do indexing projects correctly and conscientiously, and to return them to clients well before the due date. Indeed, I have never missed a deadline: during my 10-year tenure as the editor of the Journal of Narrative Theory (JNT), each issue went to the printer fully copyedited and ready for distribution on schedule.

Types of Work
I welcome opportunities to index (and to read!) books outside my original humanities specializations of cultural studies, gender studies, and British literature — whether trade or academic books; art, science, or social science books; government documents, non-profit records, or reference books; cookbooks, travel books, correspondence, diaries, or other archives; or histories, biographies, and self-published memoirs and novels. I even welcome opportunities to index books focusing on healthcare and medicine, having specialized in medical editing for my coursework at the University of Chicago.

Rates, Speed, and Accuracy
I offer high-quality work at reasonable rates to all my clients, giving a 5% discount to first-time authors, independent scholars, and non-profit organizations. I may be available for rush jobs (for a small additional fee). No matter how tight the timeframe, my work will adhere to the Best Practice guidelines of the American Society of Indexing.

Related Services
I provide the following services in addition to book indexing:
* Proofreading and copyediting
* Manuscript formatting
* Compilation of reference lists and bibliographies
* Checking compliance with citation and documentation styles (AMA, AP, APA, Chicago, or MLA)

Personal Background and Experience
I am a freelance editor and book indexer living and working in the Detroit Metro Area with a home in Ypsilanti, Michigan, near the Huron River, and an office in nearby Ann Arbor. After graduating with honors from the University of Arizona — with a double major in Philosophy and English, and minors in Math and Psychology — I went on to receive my doctorate in English from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Buffalo. I then became a Professor of Literature and Cultural Studies at Eastern Michigan University, where my extensive publication record prompted early advancement to Associate, Full, and finally Emerita Professor in 2008, 2012, and 2022. I’ve taught courses up to the graduate level for two departments, English and Women’s Studies, on a wide range of topics: the Gothic Novel, Film Narrative, Postcolonial Fiction, British Literature, Women’s Writing, Critical Theory, Research and Composition, and Queer, LBGTQ+, and Critical Disability Studies. In 2023 I began my freelance editing business, Assurance Editing LLC, after completing a professional certificate in Editing from the Graham School of the University of Chicago.
