2015 Call for Submissions: ASI/EIS Publishing Award for Excellence in Indexing

Submissions accepted until February 20, 2015

ASI-EISAwardArtDid you write an excellent index in 2014? Then consider submitting it for the 2015 ASI/EIS Publishing Award for Excellence in Indexing. Nominations for the award are welcome from indexers or publishers and will be accepted from December 1, 2014, to February 20, 2015.

The ASI/EIS Award recognizes the normally anonymous indexers and the publishers who provide high-quality indexes to serve their readers. The indexer of the winning index receives $1,000 from EIS Publishing and a plaque. The publisher of the book is also recognized with a plaque.

This prestigious award was established in 1978 as the ASI/H.W. Wilson Award to honor excellence in indexing of an English language monograph or other non-serial print work published in the United States in the previous year (2014 for the 2015 judging). Books with a 2014 copyright date, or those with a 2015 copyright date in distribution prior to December 31, 2014, are eligible (proof of distribution date is required).

The judges are interested in seeing indexes that address the text with high standards of index quality and are well-typeset, providing the user with easy, excellent access to the material in the book. ASI/EIS Publishing Award books serve as models for the profession.

Ina Gravitz (board liaison to the ASI/EIS Award committee) stated, “The ASI Board and the judging committee wishes to remind indexers and publishers that we are looking for excellence in indexing. This excellence can be found in indexes to ALL GENRES of books, not just scholarly books. Realizing that the membership and publishers associated the former call for submissions with scholarly works, the wording has been modified to be more inclusive.”

Charlee Trantino added, “We are holding to the same rigorous standards but expect that this change will allow judges to consider a broader spectrum of genres, so that they can discover an excellent book deserving of this prestigious award."

The 2015 award will be presented at the Annual Conference of the American Society for Indexing, April 30-May 1, 2015, in Seattle, Washington.
